How to Choose the Right Web Design Agency

Smart, grounded advice for teams who can’t afford another bad build.

If your last website project didn’t go to plan, you’re not alone.

Most of our clients come to us after one of these:

  • A developer who disappeared mid-project
  • A design that looked great—but no one could edit
  • A build that broke down when it needed to scale
  • An agency that overpromised, under-communicated, or just didn’t get it

If that’s your situation, this guide is for you.

Let’s break down what to ask, what to look for, and how to find a web design partner that can actually deliver, especially if you’re a growing business, not a tech giant.

01. Do they start with your goals or their process?

A good agency doesn’t sell solutions before they understand the problem.

They ask about your business, your users, your bottlenecks.

🔴 Red flag: They send a pricing sheet without asking question
🟢 Green flag: They run a discovery process before building anything

02. Can they do both design and development well?

Plenty of agencies can do one. Few can do both well.
Design-only teams may hand off to a dev who misses the mark. Dev-only teams often overlook UX entirely.

You want a team that can design user-friendly, on-brand, and performance-driven websites then build them properly.

🔴 Red flag: They mention “we’ll figure out dev later”
🟢 Green flag: They have in-house or partner devs who’ve built sites like yours

3. Will you be able to edit the site yourself?

Unless you’re hiring an internal dev, you need a site you can manage without breaking it.

Ask about:

  • CMS options (WordPress, Webflow, etc.)
  • Handover documentation or training
  • Access levels and content control

🔴 Red flag: “Just email us when you need changes”
🟢 Green flag: “We’ll train your team to manage it in-house”

04. Do they understand performance and SEO?

A beautiful site that loads slowly or can’t be found on Google? Useless.

Every agency should know the basics of SEO, including:

  • Page speed optimization
  • Metadata and semantic structure
  • Mobile responsiveness
  • Accessibility and alt text
  • Site architecture that supports internal linking

🔴 Red flag: “We’re just the designers—SEO is separate”
🟢 Green flag: SEO and performance are baked into the build

05. Can they show proof, not just pretty pictures?

A homepage screenshot tells you nothing.

Ask for:

  • A site they built that’s live today
  • A project that resulted in better leads or traffic
  • A long-term client relationship

🔴 Red flag: Portfolio has no context, data, or client quotes
🟢 Green flag: They share before/after results or case studies

Freelancer vs Agency: Which is right for you?

Freelancer

Web Design Agency

If you’re scaling or rebranding, an agency with a track record and team-based delivery is the safer bet.

Local vs Remote: Does it matter?

Not always. But if you’re in regional Australia or NZ and value clear communication,
it helps to work with a team that:

Understands your market

Doesn’t need three meetings to learn what “Wagga Wagga” is

Builds websites that work in your local conditions (NBN speeds, regional SEO, etc.)

TL;DR – Signs You’ve Found the Right Web Design Agency

Questions to Ask in a Discovery Call

  1. Who will I be working with?
  2. What platforms do you recommend and why?
  3. How long does a typical build take?
  4. What happens if we need to pause or pivot?
  5. Will I be able to manage the site after launch?
  6. Do you include SEO and performance optimization?
  7. Can you show me something you’ve built recently?
